History of the Conference
Please join the University of Pennsylvania Black Law Students Association for our 36th Annual Dr. Sadie T.M. Alexander Commemorative Conference, which celebrates the life of Dr. Alexander, the first Black woman to graduate from Penn Law in 1927. Since 1988, Penn BLSA has held an annual conference to honor Dr. Alexander's legacy by exploring legal issues that are pertinent to the Black community and committing to progressive legal advocacy.
The title of this year's Conference is "The Continued Fight for Equality: 60 Years with the Civil Rights Act of 1964." The Conference will examine the lasting impact of this pivotal 20th-century legislation, as its core purpose is still under attack nearly 60 years later. Further, the Conference features engaging discussions with political activists, scholars, and legal practitioners, dissecting the Act's complexities and its future. We'll also spotlight Dr. Alexander's significant contributions, particularly her involvement in President Truman's Committee on Civil Rights.
